GOTS Certification: What Does It Mean for You, and Why Can You Find It on Our Towels?

When you buy a new hand towel, bath towel, or bathrobe, you’re probably mainly concerned with how soft it is, how well it absorbs water, how long it will last, and whether it will suit your bathroom.

But you may also have come across the label GOTS on some textile products.

What does GOTS actually mean? Is GOTS certification just another eco label, or can it really tell you something useful when choosing bathroom textiles?

At Pamukia, we chose to pursue GOTS certification because we didn’t want to focus only on what material a towel is made from, but also on how it was made.

And that is the key difference.

What is GOTS?

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is an international standard for textiles made from certified organic fibres. It covers not only the origin of the cotton, but also sets strict environmental and social requirements for textile processing throughout the entire supply chain.

Put simply:

GOTS helps you find out not only whether a textile contains organic cotton, but also whether it was made in accordance with established environmental and social requirements.

This is especially important for products we use every day and that come into direct contact with our skin—for example, towels, bath towels, bathrobes, and bathroom textiles.

Why isn’t “100% cotton” enough?

Cotton, by itself, is not a certification.

You’ll find a huge range of cotton towels on the market. But the label 100% cotton alone doesn’t tell you where the cotton was grown, under what conditions it was processed, or what requirements the manufacturer had to meet.

Likewise, the labels organic cotton or organic don’t automatically mean that the finished textile product meets GOTS requirements.

GOTS goes further.

The certification covers the entire process, from the certified organic origin of the fibres through processing and manufacturing to the finished product. Checks include, for example, the chemicals used, manufacturing processes, wastewater, material traceability, and workers’ social conditions.

So, what does GOTS check?

Key areas include:

  • the origin of organic fibres,

  • the use of chemicals during processing,

  • wastewater management,

  • the environmental impact of production,

  • material traceability,

  • working conditions,

  • the prohibition of child and forced labour,

  • workers’ health and safety,

  • responsible business practices.

That’s exactly why we consider GOTS a much more useful piece of information than simply “100% cotton”.

What does GOTS mean for you as a customer?

That may be the most important question.

GOTS certification can help you make a more informed choice about what you’re really buying.

When you see a correctly labelled GOTS product, you have independently verified information about its origin and processing. That’s because certification isn’t just an internal claim made by the manufacturer. GOTS works through independent certification bodies.

For customers, this primarily means:

1. Greater transparency

Sustainability has become a very widely used word.

You’ll find “eco-friendly”, “natural”, “sustainable”, “organic” or “eco” on a huge range of products.

The problem is that a marketing label alone may not tell you what exactly it stands for.

GOTS is a specific standard with clearly defined requirements and independent checks.

2. Certified organic origin of the fibres

GOTS requires certified organic fibres to come from a recognised organic farming system.

For products labelled GOTS Organic, at least 95% of the fibre content must be certified organic.

That is one reason why terms such as organic cotton, organic fibres, or organic textiles are often associated with GOTS.

3. Stricter rules on chemicals

A range of chemicals are used in textile manufacturing—for example, during dyeing and other stages of processing.

GOTS sets requirements for the chemical inputs used and prohibits or restricts substances that are considered problematic under the standard. Wastewater management is also monitored.

This is particularly important for textiles we use every day in direct contact with our skin.

GOTS is not just about the environment. It’s also about people

One thing that is often overlooked when explaining GOTS is the social aspect of production.

GOTS also includes social criteria based, among other things, on key conventions of the International Labour Organization (ILO).

For example, the standard sets requirements relating to the prohibition of child and forced labour, workplace safety, non-discrimination, and workers’ rights.

This matters to us.

When you buy a towel, you don’t see the factory where it was made. You don’t see the workers who made it or the processes it went through.

Certification is therefore a way to verify part of that story, rather than simply assume it.

How can you tell if a product is genuinely GOTS certified?

It’s worth being a little cautious here.

It’s not enough for a manufacturer to write on its website:

“Made from GOTS-certified cotton.”

That is not the same as saying that the finished product is GOTS certified. GOTS explicitly warns that simply claiming to use GOTS-certified yarn or fabric does not, by itself, mean the finished product is certified.

A correct GOTS label includes, among other things:

  • the GOTS logo,

  • the relevant labelling category,

  • the name or identification of an approved certification body,

  • a certification number.

You can also verify the certification in the GOTS database.

That’s why we recommend looking beyond a green logo or the word “organic” and checking exactly what the certification covers.

GOTS vs. OEKO-TEX: What’s the difference?

We get this question a lot.

GOTS and OEKO-TEX are not the same thing.

OEKO-TEX focuses primarily on testing textiles for the presence of harmful substances.

GOTS is a more comprehensive standard covering the organic origin of fibres, environmentally responsible processing, chemicals, traceability, and social conditions throughout the textile supply chain.

That doesn’t mean one certificate is automatically “better” than the other. Each addresses a slightly different area.

However, if you’re looking for organic textiles made responsibly, GOTS is one of the most comprehensive standards you’re likely to come across.

Why did we choose GOTS at Pamukia?

Pamukia was founded on a simple idea:

We want quality bathroom textiles to be not only beautiful and comfortable, but also made in a way that makes sense.

That’s why, when selecting our products, we look at more than just:

  • cotton quality,

  • fabric weight,

  • absorbency,

  • softness,

  • craftsmanship,

  • design and colours,

we also consider the origin of the material and how the product is made.

GOTS matters to us because it lets us work with a specific standard and verified requirements instead of relying on vague environmental claims.

GOTS towels: Quality towels with a story

We use towels every day.

In the morning after a shower, in the evening after a bath, for children after swimming, after exercise, or perhaps after a sauna.

That’s why we believe it makes sense to think not only about how well a towel absorbs water, but also about what it’s made from and how it was produced.

If you’re looking for GOTS-certified organic cotton towels, take a look at our range:

For extra comfort, you can also pair your towels with our bath towels:

And if you’d like every detail of your bathroom to match, you can complement your towels with bath mats:

GOTS bathrobes: Comfort that makes more sense

The same principle applies to bathrobes.

A bathrobe comes into direct contact with your skin and is often worn straight after a bath or shower.

That’s why we’re pleased to offer a quality cotton bathrobe that focuses not only on comfort, but also on a more responsible way of making it.

Does GOTS guarantee that a product is “perfect”?

No.

And it’s only fair to say so openly.

GOTS certification doesn’t mean that a product has zero environmental impact or is automatically the best textile product available.

It is a standard with specific requirements and checks.

Its main value is that customers don’t have to rely solely on the manufacturer’s marketing claims. GOTS sets requirements that apply to the entire supply chain, from organic fibres through processing to the finished textile product.

And we believe transparency is important when choosing textiles.

What should you take away from GOTS?

If we had to explain GOTS in one sentence:

GOTS is an international standard that helps verify that textiles come from certified organic fibres and are processed in accordance with established environmental and social criteria.

So when choosing a new hand towel, bath towel, bathrobe, or other bathroom textile, you don’t have to consider only colour, size, and fabric weight.

You can also look at how the product was made.

And that’s exactly why we at Pamukia have chosen to give GOTS certification so much attention.

Because we believe that a quality towel can be beautiful, soft, absorbent, and made with greater respect for people and the environment.
