What towel weight is best: 400, 500, 600, or 650 g/m²?

Jaká gramáž ručníku je nejlepší? 400, 500, 600 nebo 650 g/m²?

When choosing a new towel, you may have noticed labels such as 400, 500, 600, or 650 g/m². What do these numbers actually mean? And is a higher GSM always a sign of a better-quality towel?

A towel’s GSM is one of the important factors to consider when choosing one. It affects the towel’s density, feel against the skin, absorbency, and drying time. But the highest GSM is not automatically the best choice for everyone.

In this article, we’ll explain what towel GSM means, how 400, 500, 600, and 650 g/m² differ, and which GSM to choose based on what you expect from your towel.

What does towel GSM mean?

A towel’s GSM is measured in grams per square metre (g/m²). You’ll also often see the abbreviation GSM – grams per square metre.

For example, a towel with a GSM of 650 g/m² weighs approximately 650 grams per square metre of fabric.

GSM is related to the amount of material and the density of the terry fabric. Generally speaking:

  • lower GSM means a lighter towel that usually dries faster,

  • higher GSM means a denser, fuller towel,

  • higher GSM can also mean greater absorbency,

  • but very dense towels usually take longer to dry.

GSM, however, is not the only indicator of quality. The type of cotton, fibre quality, yarn type, terry construction, and finishing process also play an important role.

Is a higher-GSM towel always better?

No.

A higher GSM alone does not guarantee a better-quality towel. It’s like other textiles: what matters is not just the amount of material, but also its quality and how it is made.

A 650 g/m² towel can feel very soft, dense, and absorbent. But if it is made from low-quality cotton and poorly spun yarn, a high GSM alone won’t make it a luxury towel.

When choosing a towel, we therefore recommend considering several factors:

  • GSM,

  • material,

  • cotton quality,

  • terry construction,

  • yarn type,

  • certifications,

  • and, of course, care instructions.

400 g/m² towel – lightweight and quick-drying

Towels with a GSM of around 400 g/m² are among the lighter options.

Their main advantages are their low weight and relatively quick drying time. This makes them practical for things like:

  • travel,

  • sports,

  • the gym,

  • the pool,

  • frequent washing.

If you need a towel that you can use several times a day and that dries quickly, a lower GSM can be a practical choice.

On the other hand, you can’t expect it to feel as dense and luxurious as a towel with a GSM of 600 or 650 g/m².

Ideal for: travel, sports, and situations where quick drying is a priority.

500 g/m² towel – an all-round choice

500 g/m² offers an excellent balance of comfort, absorbency, and drying time.

A towel like this already feels pleasantly dense, but it isn’t too heavy. That makes it suitable for everyday use at home.

It’s a good choice for customers looking for:

  • a comfortable towel for everyday use,

  • good absorbency,

  • a reasonable drying time,

  • a comfortable balance between lightness and density.

Ideal for: everyday use in the home bathroom.

600 g/m² towel – greater density and comfort

At 600 g/m², we enter the category of denser, premium towels.

Compared with a 400 or 500 g/m² towel, it feels fuller and softer. The greater amount of material can contribute to excellent absorbency and a pleasant feel during use.

However, a denser towel contains more material, so it may take longer to dry than a lighter towel.

Ideal for: the home bathroom and anyone who prefers a soft, dense towel.

650 g/m² towel – premium comfort

And this is the GSM we chose for our Pamukia collection.

Our towels have a GSM of 650 g/m² because we wanted to create a towel with a distinctly dense, soft, and luxurious feel.

A higher GSM means more material in the towel, creating fuller terry loops. Combined with quality cotton and a carefully chosen construction, this can result in a towel that feels pleasant against the skin and absorbs water very well.

But Pamukia is about more than just the number 650.

Our towels combine:

650 g/m²
for density and a premium feel,

100% organic cotton
for a pleasant, natural feel,

Low Twist yarn
for soft, airy terry loops,

GOTS certification
as an important standard for organic textiles.

The result is a towel designed for customers who want to enjoy the comfort of a quality hotel or spa, every day at home.

400 vs. 500 vs. 600 vs. 650 g/m²

GSM Feel Absorbency Drying time Suitable for
400 g/m² lightweight good quick sports, travel
500 g/m² all-round very good moderate everyday use
600 g/m² dense high slower comfortable home bathroom
650 g/m² very dense very high slower premium comfort, spa

What GSM towel should you choose?

The best GSM depends mainly on what you expect from your towel.

Want a lightweight towel that dries quickly?

Choose around 400 g/m².

It’s suitable for travel, the gym, or the pool, for example.

Want an all-round towel for everyday use?

500 g/m² offers an excellent balance of comfort and practicality.

Do you like dense, soft towels?

Consider 600 g/m² or higher.

Want maximum comfort and a premium feel?

This is where 650 g/m² makes sense.

That’s exactly why we chose this GSM for Pamukia towels.

Why did we choose 650 g/m² for Pamukia?

When we designed Pamukia towels, we didn’t want to create just another ordinary towel.

We wanted to create premium bathroom textiles that feel wonderful every time you use them.

So we set out to find the right combination of GSM, material, and construction.

The result is:

650 g/m² + 100% organic cotton + Low Twist + GOTS

The high GSM provides density and comfort. The Low Twist construction helps create soft terry loops. Organic cotton gives the material its pleasant, natural character.

So it’s not just that our towel has a GSM of 650.

It’s about how those 650 grams are put to use.

What is Low Twist and why does it matter?

If you look only at GSM when choosing a towel, you may overlook another important factor – yarn type.

In conventional yarn, the fibres are twisted more tightly. Low Twist yarn has a lower twist.

This allows finer, airier terry loops to be created, making the towel pleasant against the skin.

The combination of high GSM and Low Twist construction is one of the reasons premium towels can feel so soft and comfortable.

Is 650 g/m² right for everyone?

Not necessarily.

If you travel frequently or need your towel to dry as quickly as possible, for example, a lighter GSM may be more practical.

But if you’re looking for a towel primarily for your home bathroom and maximum comfort, 650 g/m² can be an excellent choice.

Keep in mind, too, that a denser towel may take longer to dry. So it’s important to let it dry thoroughly after use.

How should you care for a high-GSM towel?

Proper care also helps keep a quality towel soft and absorbent for a long time.

We recommend:

  • not using more detergent than necessary,

  • not overdoing it with fabric softener,

  • not overloading the washing machine,

  • drying the towel thoroughly after washing,

  • and washing it according to the manufacturer’s instructions before first use.

Fabric softener can leave a coating on the fibres that reduces a towel’s ability to absorb water. If maximum absorbency is your priority, it’s best to limit its use.

Frequently asked questions

What does GSM mean for a towel?

GSM means grams per square metre. It indicates the weight of the fabric per square metre.

What is the best GSM for a towel?

There is no single best GSM for everyone. A lower GSM of around 400 g/m² is suitable for lightweight, quick-drying towels. Around 500 g/m² is a popular choice for everyday use. If you prefer a denser towel and premium comfort, you can choose 600–650 g/m².

Is a 650 g/m² towel better quality than a 500 g/m² towel?

Not automatically. A 650 g/m² towel is usually denser and feels different to use. But overall quality also depends on the type of cotton, yarn, construction, and finishing.

Is 650 GSM suitable for a bath sheet?

Yes. A high GSM is suitable for customers who prefer dense, soft, absorbent bath sheets. However, they will take longer to dry than lighter options.

What GSM is best for home use?

A range of around 500–650 g/m² is very versatile for home use. If comfort and density are your top priorities, we recommend a higher GSM.

Why are Pamukia towels 650 g/m²?

We chose 650 g/m² as part of our focus on premium comfort. Our towels combine a high GSM with 100% organic cotton, Low Twist construction, and GOTS certification.

Our choice? 650 g/m².

When choosing a towel, don’t focus on just one number.

GSM matters, but cotton quality, terry construction, and finishing are just as important.

If you’re looking for a lightweight towel for travel, 400 g/m² may be ideal. For all-round use, 500 g/m² is a great choice. But if you want a dense, soft, premium towel for everyday comfort at home, it’s worth considering a GSM of 600–650 g/m².

And that’s exactly why we chose 650 g/m² for Pamukia.

Because we believe that even drying off after a shower can be a little everyday ritual.
